Pro and Contra with Multimedia Learning

PRO AND CONTRA WITH MULTIMEDIA LEARNING

Well, this is my group's discussion about using multimedia learning in CALL (Computer Assisted Language Learning) subject. We can conclude there are some pros and contras in them, such as :

PROS
1.      Provide interaction, communicative activities and real audience. On last week, we can interact with our lecturer face to face although we are in different place. We can actively communicate with lecturer with chatting via Skype. Then, our lecturer can see our attendance by using video call in Skype, so that he can know who’s come and who’s not come and he can check where is the position of each student. So, the condition of learning is same as usual
2.      Support collaborative learning. Multimedia learning gives a chance to students in group to collaborate in every task in multimedia learning. After discussed about some topic, we can discuss it too with our lecturer to check the result of our discussion. For example, last week we did some tasks in unit 3 and our lecturer checked what scores we got, and we got some comments from our lecturer.
3.      Utilize task-based and problem-solving activities. In multimedia learning, we have to do some tasks and most of them are difficult and need a solving, so with these task we can discussed and found the solution from the questions.
4.      Facilitate focused development of English language skill. The multimedia learning we used is in English, so we have to understand the meaning of  them and it means that our vocabulary increase when we read and used this multimedia learning
5.      We can got many new knowledge about internet and how to set the properties about it. So, even we are not a technical student, we can get many knowledge about technologies

CONTRAS
1.      The connection of internet is really affected the multimedia learning. It depends on the network connection. So if the connection is bad, the multimedia learning can’t work properly
2.      The lecturer didn’t know the exact situation in the class. The lecturer knew that the students are attended the class, but when he’s offline he didn’t know what the students do in that class. It’s not guarantee the all of students are learning, maybe some of them are playing games or using the internet to open their social media like Facebook, Twitter, etc.
3.      The lecturer have to check the students one by one, and its can spend a lot of time if the connection is not really good
4.       Sometimes the tasks are too difficult, because it is about software or hardware of computer that maybe not all the students can know about it, so we need explanation about that
5.      We must provide ourselves with a good modem. If we have a bad modem, it’s really affect all of our activities in multimedia learning and we really depends on that facility like that
